Before you go…

Whew! Well, that was fun…

Thinking about not having the title of ‘high school journalist’ anymore is a bittersweet feeling. I am so stoked about what is in store for me in the next chapter of my life and career, but I can’t help but wish for one more time signing off with Bridgeland Student Media. There’s something special about being a high school journalist. The way you are able to find your identity amidst a time where most can’t find it, the never-ending excitement for the next story. You do it simply for the love it and nothing else, and it has been a true privilege to have worked in the journalism space these past few school years.

My entire scholastic career has essentially been a one-woman show. Most of the work in this portfolio is completely self-taught. This portfolio itself was put together entirely by me until I reached out to several professionals for help to fine tune it. The only sport I could consistently report on was football due to my strenuous schedule as an athlete and leader of my school’s publication. Amidst an advisor change my junior year, a global pandemic and obstacles thrown my way, I have adapted to create opportunities for myself to improve as a journalist.

There are more stories to publish, more times in front of a camera and more pictures to take, but I will forever cherish this phase in my career. I put my heart and soul into journalism during my time in high school. I hope I encouraged other aspiring high school journalists, especially young women, to do the same. The only way to bring light into a world of darkness is to talk about it! I have faith that by people like me utilizing the voice they have within for good, we as the next generation of leaders can cultivate a more inclusive, compassionate environment for all.

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and by traveling all over the state to provide coverage to a variety of audiences, I have a deeper understanding of that saying. The connections I made with people within the industry, the unbelievable events I experienced and the amount of support I received all just feel stronger because of the Lone Star State culture. It’s been an honor to be able to spotlight some amazing people, places and happenings within these borders, and I’m excited to continue to do so in my collegiate career.

I have tried to soak in every little nugget of wisdom I’ve learned along the way, and I hope this portfolio showcased not only what I’ve learned so far but also my eagerness to continue learning about how to perfect my craft. Every single part of this website was made with love, care and late-night snacks, and I appreciate the time taken to look at it.
