NEWS

There is nothing more powerful than being well-informed.

I feel a great responsibility when writing a news or news-feature story. I know whether it is one or 1000 people, someone out there is relying on me for information. I try to cover current events from a unique perspective while simultaneously providing clear, concise knowledge.

A PUSH TO THE POLLS

In my economics class, a representative from the League of Women Voters of Cy-Fair named Anita Woolley came in one day to talk about voter registration. At first, my peers and I groaned getting word class time would be taken away from homework to listen to a lecture. That sentiment quickly changed as everyone, myself included, was captivated by the way Woolley expressed how important it was to make voting a ‘lifetime habit’ as the voting numbers have declined with younger generations. After expressing LWV Cy-Fair was helping seniors across the school district in their voter registration process, I approached her after class and set up an interview to document her and the organization’s commitment to civic participation in a news-feature.

CY-FAIR ISD ENACTS NEW SAFETY MEASURES FOR 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR

Coming back to school after the summer of 2022 looked a lot different than years past. It was all so new and unexplained to many, foreign alarm sounds on open doors, the restriction of using the flex space to do classwork in and new signs everywhere. I decided to write about what prompted these new security policies and how Cy-Fair ISD plans to stay committed to making sure all students and staff feel safe.

PALS LAUNCH NEW CHARITY EVENT AT BRIDGELAND FOR DISABLED ATHLETES

I have always admired Bridgeland’s Peer Assisted Leadership (popularly known as PALs) program and the work they do with at-risk elementary students. So when I caught wind of a possible charity event they planned on spearheading, I jumped at the opportunity to write about it. Bridgeland hired the PALs teacher as the head basketball coach that year. The collaboration between the athletic and leadership program sparked a positive change, one I thought was worth reporting and writing about.
